Hindi Shala Curriculum

Level 1

Prerequisites
As this is first year for Hindi class, all the students between the ages of 6 and 8 years will by default be placed in Level 1. 

¨      Ability to recognize and write all the letters in Hindi alphabet (varnamala) in order.  Compound words may not be taught to younger kids.
¨      Ability to recognize sounds of all the letters and be able to identify beginning and ending sound in words (only consonants)
¨      Conversational skills – Able to answer basic questions about him/herself, e.g. “aapka naam kya hai?”, greeting and other common manner words in Hindi
¨      Counting in Hindi up to 20 (only verbal)
¨      Vocabulary – common words like body parts, fruits
¨      Simple age appropriate poems/songs/stories in Hindi – e.g., nursery rhymes for younger kids, national anthem for older kids

¨      Text Book
o       Hindi Praveshika
o       Crown Sulekh Chitravali.


Level 2

Prerequisites
As this is first year for Hindi class, all the students above 8 years of age will by default be placed in Level 2, unless, they chose to start with Level 1. Any student under 8 years of age can enroll in Level 2 if he/she can read and write all the Hindi consonants, except conjuncts (i.e. compound letters like tra, dya, etc.), and all the vowels. We would highly recommend that kids under 6 years start with Level 1 as Level 2 may overwhelm younger kids.

¨      Ability to read and write simple words without any vowels
¨      Introduction to vowels and blending sounds – ability to read and write words with “maatras”
¨      Introduction to sentence formation – read simple stories
¨      Conversational skills
¨      Counting in Hindi up to 100 (only verbal)
¨      Vocabulary
¨      Simple age appropriate poems/songs/stories in Hindi – e.g., nursery rhymes for younger kids, national anthem for older kids

¨      Text Book
o       Hindi Praveshika
o       Crown Sulekh Chitravali.


Level 6 (College School Students, Young Professionals, Adult Education)

¨      Young adults (ages 18 and above) will be able to form, read, and write words using letters and vowels
¨      Read, and comprehend short stories
¨      Main objective is to improve vocabulary (by using dictionary), spelling, sentence formation, and comprehension
